Retail is a soul sucking industry that sends even the most level-headed employees into madness. After months, years, or decades in the same sales department, many retail workers grow apathetic; dealing with Karens, bad management, and a looping music playlist can do that to a person. Although, every now and then, a retail store is blessed with an overachiever, a real workaholic who would rather use their time on the clock beautifying their department, restocking shelves, and doing their best. Unfortunately, more often than not, this hardworking mentality gets crushed out of them, as managers will do anything to nitpick their fellowship and force them into cookie-cutter shapes that say, "How may I help you?" at least a thousand times a day.

However, there's something oddly satisfying as a retail worker when you learn exactly how irreplaceable you are in your department. For u/Kodeake, this satisfaction was enough to push him out of the department for good, saving him a lifetime of disappointments and unrequited efforts.
